Tucson Welcomes Eric Darius, Gregg Karukas and Jay Soto!
October 24 – 7:30 PM
JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort Pavillion

AZ Entertainment and Events (AZEE) is proud to present “Night of a Thousand Grooves,” another world class ensemble of contemporary jazz artists featuring sax prodigy, Eric Darius; masterful keyboardist/composer Gregg Karukas and award-winning fiery guitarist Jay Soto.

Come out to the luxurious JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort Pavillion for a great evening of soulful, smooth grooves featuring contemporary jazz greats: Sax prodigy, Eric Darius; masterful keyboardist -composer Gregg Karukas and award-winning, fiery guitarist Jay Soto. Two dance floors, drink specials, $99 resort stay and great fun!

According to Darius, “Although I’ve been to Arizona before, I have never had the opportunity to perform in Tucson. I am very excited about coming and ready to bring the house down!! One thing I can definitely promise is that this show is going to be hot!!

“Hot” is probably putting it mildly since Darius’ performances have been described as nothing short of a “blazing inferno of pure body rockin’, soul-stirring energy.” His rapid ascendance to the top of Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz charts, not once; but multiple times, is remarkable. Darius’ latest CD, “Goin’ All Out” has debuted on the legendary Blue Note record label. But even more unusual is how well grounded Eric is in handling celebrity and its trappings. We recently sat down with the 26-year old artist who has taken the contemporary jazz world by storm to uncover the secret to his phenomenal and early success.

“I attribute a lot of the success I am experiencing with my music career to my parents. They exposed me to jazz at a very early age, so I had a love and appreciation for it very early on. It wasn't until I was nine, and I saw the saxophonist at our church play every single Sunday. I saw the emotion that he exuded when he played and it really sparked my interest—I just fell in love with the saxophone. I listened to a lot of Grover Washington, Jr. and David Sanborn and Kirk Whalum growing up. My parents bought me a saxophone for my tenth birthday and I started playing.

Despite a demanding touring schedule Eric is earning a business degree at the University of Florida. “I think it is important for all artists to be able to understand the business aspects of our careers—a lot of them don't know what it entails; everything from finances and management to marketing. I think that it will definitely be beneficial to me as an artist, to help create longevity for my career. I plan on applying everything that I learn with my business degree.”

What advice does he have for aspiring musicians?
For any aspiring musician who might be reading this article, my advice to them would be to always follow your dreams! In order to succeed in the music business, it takes A LOT of practice, patience, and perseverance!!

Inspired by John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, David Sanborn, Kenny Garrett and Michael Brecker, Darius began recording his compositions and sold demos at ages 13 and 15. He soon hooked up with members of saxophonist Richard Elliot's band who produced his first full-length CD, Cruisin'. "I wrote most of the music from that CD when I was 14," Darius says, "and we released it in 2000 when I was 17.

One local event found Darius opening for David Benoit and Navarro. Blown away by what he had seen, Navarro agreed to produce his next album even before a record deal was signed. Don’t miss the rare opportunity to catch this rising star in Tucson along with his equally talented and award winning ensemble members, Gregg Karukas, Jay Soto, Mario Mendivil and Ira King.

Artistic Director, Jeff Lorber shares, “This will be the first time we’ve assembled and performed as a group. It was brought about by our shared appreciation of the theme. Motown remains one of the most stunning success stories of the 20th century.”

His just released CD, “Doin the D” features a star studded cast of players and was produced by Jeff Lorber. Zonjic takes the flute to a place of prominence as a voice in the smooth & pop-jazz idiom. Personal Bio
A Profile in Black

In 1962 he graduated from Mitchell High School in Memphis, Tennessee. At the time, this was an all Black school. His teachers were really concerned about the welfare and the future of all the students.

George attended undergraduate school at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia in the turbulent 60’s where he was active in the Civil Rights Movement while there. He participated in numerous Civil Rights demonstrations including picketing Lester Maddox’s “Pickrick” restaurant. Mr. Maddox would go on to become a one term Governor of the state of Georgia. At one point the Klan was on one side of the street and the Civil Rights protesters were on the other.

In the summer of 1964 George was in Atlantic City for the Democratic National Convention where Lyndon Johnson was nominated for President. This was after he had taken over for the assassinated John F. Kennedy. An 18 year old George Puckett, found himself on a picket line outside the convention hall demonstrating to have the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party Delegates seated. One night he found himself arm-in-arm with famed Civil Rights leader Bayard Rustin, singing "We Shall Overcome."

While attending Morehouse College, he was also privileged to have had breakfast and conversation with Dr. Martin Luther King, along with a dozen other students. The location of these breakfasts was a student center named the Canterbury House and was sponsored by the Episcopalian Church. The Canterbury House was located across from the Morehouse Campus.

After two years of attending Morehouse He had to drop out because of financial reasons. He then attended Le Moyne College in Memphis, another Historically Black College. After one year of attendance at LE Moyne, the army was about to draft him. This was at the height of the Viet Nam War. Not wanting to be in the Army, he joined the U.S. Air Force and served for nearly four years.

After an Honorable Discharge from military service in 1966, George attended San Jose State University and became a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.
Following his graduation from San Jose State, he attended graduate school at the University of California at Berkeley working towards a degree in Political Science.
After graduating from San Jose State University, George became a Realtor with American Realty in San Jose, Ca. After several years with the American Realty, he and a friend, Frank Morales opened Ram Realtors, PM. After George left the company and moved to Tucson, AZ the company’s name was changed to Ram Realtors FM and still exists today.

George became a Realtor in Tucson after moving there. He was also in the Mortgage business for a while.

After a nearly 10 years of marriage, he and his second wife Tina retired and spent seven years in Baja California Norte, near the town of Ensenada. He wrote a book about those times, the good and bad, which they experienced while there.

After seven years in Mexico, they were forced to return to Tucson after George’s oldest son was in a tragic automobile accident, which rendered him quadriplegic. They currently reside in Tucson, AZ where George is working on two new books and several other projects..

What are you doing to accomplish your Career Goals or Life Goals?

"I am 63 years young, The picture of me was taken in June of this year, 2008. My wife and I retired to Mexico 14 years ago but had to return to Tucson 7 years ago when our oldest son was in a car accident and is now quadriplegic.

Last year I decided to write a book about our experiences being a Black couple in an All White Community. It was published in June of this year. The title is, "Baja Diaries-Chronicles of a Paradise Lost." It has been selling quite well. I have a marketing website at http://www.bajadiaries.com. Looking forward, I have two more books in the works. The first one is about our 7 years of care giving for our son Everett. I am hopeful that it will help someone facing a similar situation to ours. I also make references to our youngest son, Edward who was paralyzed by a shot in the back when he was 18 years old. He is paraplegic.

The second book I'm working on is my first Novel. The title is, "The Black and White Murders." The setting is a bedroom community of Memphis, TN, Covington. These two projects have been delayed because I started a website as a gathering place for the African American CommUNITY of Tucson.

From that one website I have helped several people in several other communities to start websites, including San Diego, Stockton, CA and Phoenix, AZ. I developed an explanatory website at, http://www.tucsons-ebonycity.com. I think that's enough for now, maybe too much. "
