Profile Information

Personal Bio
I was born in Guyana, South America and moved to Gilbert, AZ in 1998 where I did my last two years of High School at Gilbert High School. My move to Tucson happened in 2000 after graduating high school and beginning my college journey at University of Arizona where I majored in Molecular and Cellular Biology. Upon obtaining my B. S in 2004, I decided to continue my education at UA by pursuing my Ph.D. degree in Medical Pharmacology which I hope to finish up in 2009. As you can see, I have always had a great love for the Sciences and one day in the future hope to be doing research that addresses some health disparities in the black community. I have always been fortunate to be surrounded by mentors who have supported and motivated me to pursue my dreams. I look forward to doing the same for those that are coming up behind me.
Currently, I am trying to get focused in order to write my dissertation. But this does not stop me from being involved. One of my biggest rewards in life has been to work as the Public Relations Officer for the UA chapter of Black Graduate Students Association. As a founding member, it is truly inspirational to see the talent that this organization holds. Being surrounded by the future leaders in our community is an irreplaceable experience.
I am also involved with a UA organization called Sisters of Unity which focuses on building a sisterhood among African American Women in the Tucson community. We also focus on inspiring, motivating and empowering all women.
With my continued efforts to mentor the future generation, I am a community mentor for the 360 degree first year scholar's program at UA. Helping these students get connected with the right people and resources is a great experience.
Tell us about business
Tucson Premiere Open Mic is more of a passion to me than a business. It is my effort to bring people together to experience and share their talents. As a poet, I know that other poets yearn to have a venue where their talents are appreciated. But TPOM welcomes everyone, poets, singers, musicians. Feel free to check out our website at www.myspace.com/spekonitent.
First Fridays Tucson, another interest of mine. Along with Terrel Scott, we attempt to bring together people in a positive party atmosphere where its okay to put on your Sunday best and mingle with folks. WE call it a PARTY WITH A PURPOSE...check us out at www.firstfridaystucson.com.

We need to talk. Chaitra came in the salon yesterday and told me about something you did...it was like an open panel discussion for people with natural hair? I WOULD LOVE to attend the next meeting.

I'm glad you were able to vote today, especially since there were no lines. I do hope that others took advantage of that "Voter Information."

Hi Rowena! I know exactly what Sister Locks are but I would have to say that I can do them but I wouldn't sell them to anyone because I do not trust my craft enough to advertise it. But thanks for the inquiry as it helps me to understand the needs of my new friends here in Tucson. What we wear and do in New York may not necessarily be something that works for here... Stay in touch and lets do lots together....(smile).
